18 July 1918– Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo, Eastern Cape province, South Africa. His mother, Nosekeni Fanny, was one of four wives of his father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa.

1925– He began primary school near his home village of Qunu, where a teacher who was unable to pronounce his African name of Rolihlahla gave him the name "Nelson" in honour of British naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson.

1927– In this year his father Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa died; And he became the ward of the Tembu regent, Paramount Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo.
