ASUU Strike: FG And ASUU To Dialogue Again Today

Minister of Education, Professor Ruqqayatu Rufai had expressed federal government's concern over the lingering strike of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities. She said this yesterday during an interactive session with the media at “Dissemination of the World Bank Report on Nigerian Education and Skills Policy Note: Access, Equity and Quality Forum” organised by the World Bank Country Office in Nigeria.
Her expression; #“Government has no option than to make effort to resolve the strike. Mr. President is concerned; everybody is concerned, so definitely effort will have to be made to have a suitable plan. #“We are simply pleading with our colleagues in ASUU to please call off the strike, but we are meeting with them. We are meeting tomorrow, after the meeting you will know the resolutions.”
#The minister also disclosed that government had approved a comprehensive programme of rehabilitation for some federal and states’ tertiary institutions in the country as part of its sustained efforts at enhancing their infrastructure and other supportive assets required for quality education in the country. #That all the 51 federal and state polytechnics would benefit from the development initiatives through the rehabilitation of their laboratories to bring them to 25 century standards. She puts the initial cost of the comprehensive projects at N15 billion. #She elaborated on the efforts of the government towards getting most of the out-of-school children back into schools as well as providing qualitative and trans-gendered access to education, as sundry measures that #“will enhance our global competitiveness; #ensure the mobility of labour and #ultimately conserve the economic, social, political well being of the citizens.”
She further explained that in order to actualize the transformation agenda of the present administration to create euphoria for the development of the educational sector, some issues like #strengthening the institutional management of education; teacher education and development, technical and vocational education and training; research mobilisation and utilisation needed to be efficiently addressed, just as a coordinated approach is provided to address the challenges that will face the sector.
